Summer is winding down, but the music festivals in Virginia are only heating up. Check out these music stops to make throughout the state.

Carter Family Fold

Carter Family Traditional Music Festival – Hiltons, Va.
Aug. 6-7, 2016
The annual music festival is held the first weekend in August presented in honor of The Original Carter Family, the first family of country music, and commemorating the historic 1927 Bristol Recording Sessions. This year’s festival includes Lorrie Carter Bennett, Ronnie Williams and many others.


Galax Old Fiddlers Convention

Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention – Galax, Va.
Aug. 8-16, 2016
The City of Galax has the world tapping its feet as the Old Fiddlers’ Convention takes place in Felts Park. Musicians and fans from around the world travel to Galax to perform and hear the music that defines the sound of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A few hundred come with their instruments to show their skill, and compete for the cash prizes.


Richmond Jazz Festival at Maymont

Richmond Jazz Festival – Richmond, Va.
Aug. 11-14, 2016
Experience the world’s best jazz and R&B music set against the beautiful rolling hills of Maymont. Acts performing this year include Herbie Hancock, Wyclef Jean, The Roots and many more.


Blue Grass Valley Music Festival – Blue Grass, Va.
Aug. 12-14, 2016
The Blue Grass Valley Music Festival is a family-friendly event that showcases the area’s breath-taking views and a variety of diverse musical acts from rock n roll to old-time to swing to bluegrass and blues.


Shenandoah Valley Music Festival – Orkney Springs, Va.
Aug. 12-13, 2016
One of the mid-Atlantic region’s longest-running outdoor music events, the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival presents world-class music by a stellar array of performers. Acts performing in August include The SteelDrivers & The Gibson Brothers and LeAnn Rimes.


Staunton Music Festival

Staunton Music Festival – Staunton, Va.
Aug. 12-21, 2016
Hear 60 of the world’s most acclaimed musicians performing in more than 20 concerts in historic venues throughout downtown Staunton. The daily concerts range from eclectic and feature chamber music from the Middle Ages to world premieres, performed by vocalists and instrumentalists from across Europe and the U.S. There are also free pre-concert talks and special offers with numerous downtown restaurants and hotels.


Latino Fest

Annual AT&T Norfolk Latino Music Festival – Norfolk, Va.
Aug. 13, 2016
The largest outdoor dance floor in downtown Norfolk heats up at the Annual AT&T Norfolk Latino Festival. Live acts performing salsa, meringue, and guaguanco by local, regional and national recording  artists will fill Town Point Park and keep people moving all night.


GWAR B-Q – Richmond, Va.
Aug. 19-21, 2016
The costumed creatures of heavy metal band GWAR celebrate destruction and rock and roll as they take over Hadad’s Lake with a musical onslaught of the best in underground metal and punk rock acts. GWAR will headline the event along with guests Lamb of God, Against Me!, American Nightmare and many others. There are also a number of related events to be held across Richmond over the three-day weekend including a pre-party at the National and a morning after brunch at GWARbar.


Mountain Jamboree

Mountain Jamboree at Massanutten – McGaheysville, Va.
Aug. 20, 2016
Dance the night away at Massanutten’s 6th annual Mountain Jamboree festival. The event features live music, kids’ activities, hoop dance, beer, wine, food vendors, fireworks, and more. Music lineup includes Major and the Monbacks, David Wax Museum and the Hackensaw Boys.

Lockn’ Music Festival – Arrington, Va.
Aug. 25-28, 2016
Lockn’ is a four-day music festival at Oak Ridge Farm with an emphasis on music, camping, outdoor activities, regional food, beverages, and artisans. Many of the artists perform over multiple days, and be featured in unique and exciting artist pairings. Artists performing at this year’s Lockn’ Festival include Phish, My Morning Jacket, Ween, Charles Bradley, and many others.


FunkFest – Virginia Beach, Va.
Aug. 26-28, 2016
The FunkFest Beach Party features music generated by influential legends such as James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton, and The Ohio Players. The event will take place on a stage on the beach at 24th Street. Music this year features DJ Heart Attack, Evolution Soul, Blaque Velvet and more.


RTE 23 Music Festival – Wise, Va.
Aug. 27, 2016
Held on the campus of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, RTE 23 Music Festival brings a diverse mix of artists together for a full day of live music and celebrating all the old time music that originated in the area.

Festy is the best VA fest and it didn’t make the list.
