Rockn’ to Lockn’: Virginia Bands Compete for Festival Glory (Part 3)

Each week, four Virginia bands will battle it out for a chance to play the Lockn’ Music Festival in September.

Rockn’ to Lockn’ is a four night event, four city event with one band winning a much coveted performance spot at Lockn’, sharing the stage with the likes of The Doobie Brothers, Widespread Panic, Robert Plant, Gov’t Mule and many others.

On July 24, four Central Virginia bands will perform at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville.

Here are this week’s contenders:

lordnelson

Lord Nelson

Hometown: Charlottesville, Va.
Genre: Rural Rock

Lord Nelson is a 5-piece rock and roll band that embraces a driving southern rock identity. They perform original songs from a variety of genres with their three-part vocal harmonies, soaring horn lines, and funk-laden rock beats.

The Judy Chops

Hometown: Staunton, Va.
Genre: Americana, Blues & Soul

The Judy Chops bring a high energy swing & blues based Americana from the Shenandoah Valley. The band’s music is a blend of modern and vintage sounds and styles, and their show is a high energy, raucous experience that has been wowing audiences at every festival, and venue they’ve played.

Sally Rose Band

Hometown: Charlottesville, Va.
Genre: Doo Wop-Inspired Indie Rock

The Sally Rose Band is a very spirited mother/daughter fronted group. The young and vibrant band covers a vast range of genres from southern rock, to gypsy folk, to doo-wop inspired honky-tonk. Sally Rose sings music that’s mostly influenced by Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Diana Ross and Jenny Lewis.

The Mad Anthonys

Hometown: Waynesboro, Va.
Genre: Funk/Rock/Jam

The Mad Anthonys are a funk rock jam band from the Blue Ridge Mountains and madness best describes their style. The band plays original songs seeped in deep lyrics and catchy hooks with cutting edge cover tunes included. The band never plays the same set list twice, which leads to a different show every time.

The third annual Lockn’ Festival will be held at Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington, Va. on Sept. 10–13, 2015.
