Rockn’ to Lockn’: Virginia Bands Compete for Festival Glory

Each week, four Virginia bands will battle it out for a chance to play the Lockn’ Music Festival in September.

Rockn’ to Lockn’ is a four night event, four city event with one band winning a much coveted performance spot at Lockn’, sharing the stage with the likes of The Doobie Brothers, Widespread Panic, Robert Plant, Gov’t Mule and many others.

On July 10, four Coastal Virginia bands will perform at Shaka’s Live in Virginia Beach.

 

Here are the contenders:

Anthony Rosano and the Conqueroos

Hometown: Norfolk, Va.
Genre: Funk’n Rock and Soulful Blues

Anthony Rosano and the Conqueroos blend old school blues with a modern funk and rock and roll sound. The crossover appeal of the Conqueroos has led them to share the stage with a diverse range of blues artists including pioneers like Tab Benoit, Hamilton Loomis and Albert Castiglia, to more traditional artists like Big Joe and the Dyna Flows, Biscuit Miller and the Mix, and Rick Estrin and the Nightcats. VEER Magazine awarded the group its “Best Blues” award in 2014 and the band plays regularly throughout the area. The Conqueroos will often play new arrangements and invite guest musicians to the stage for a new show every time.

Hometown: Virginia Beach, Va.

Genre: Rock/Jam

Southern songwriter Seth Stainback has carved out a niche for himself with his strong blend of blues, country, folk, old gospel and rock and roll. Along with his group Roosterfoot, Stainbeck has shared the stage with the likes of Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr., ZZ Top, B.B. King, Rusted Root, Delta Rae and many others. The group released its album titled “Fire & Steel” in 2014.


 

8 armed OcTopuS

Hometown: Norfolk, Va.

Genre: Rock/Jam

The music of Norfolk rock/jam band 8 armed OcTopuS ranges from the Allman Brothers to Zappa. The band’s unique blend of rock and roll – whether it’s the wailing tones of a vintage Hammond B3 organ, grooves on the bass or vocals of power and substance. Octopus has been packing local venues for years, usually performing marathon sets filled with improvisation that fill the house.

Hometown: Virginia Beach, Va.

Genre: Jam / Funk / Rock

Virginia Beach based band Woodwork have been a mainstay of the Hampton Roads music scene for years. With influences including the likes Phish, The Grateful Dead, and moe., the band’s mix of funk, island and psychedelic jams helped the group gain an enthusiastic local following.


 

The third annual Lockn’ Festival will be held at Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington, Va. on Sept. 10–13, 2015.
