It doesn’t matter where you are in Virginia, there’s an awesome family event that all of you can enjoy.

Smith River Kayaking

Adventurous kids and parents can learn how to kayak – together – in Martinsville with the local YMCA and Smith River Adventure Outfitters. Get skilled in kayaking basics! Kids 12 and older. April 9 * $

The smallest member of the family will love touring Thistle Cove Farm in Tazewell during Sheep Shearing Day. They’ll get up close and personal with the animals while you check out the Appalachian trades – spinning, weaving, blacksmithy, woodworking, and more! April 10 * Free

Hope for kind breezes for the Blue Ridge Kite Festival in Salem! Get there quick (begins at 10 a.m.) so your kid can be one of the first 1,000 to get a free kite and t-shirt. April 17 * Free

With  your regular admission to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, you can also enjoy the Children’s Spring Fling! Introduce your child to environmental stewardship while swingin’ to the beat of family-friendly music. April 25 * Regular Admission

Since the state doesn’t recognize gay marriage or permit institutions to ban discrimination against gays, even when they want to, how do I know that these places will not refuse me and my family services? I am all for Confederate History Month, if done in the right way, but how can I be sure my children won’t be subjected to attitudes that pooh-pooh slavery in these parts of Virginia. Because I would have a problem with that.
