    Antiquing in Virginia

by Casey | Posted on August 26th, 2013

Looking for something old, sweet and pretty? Antique and trash-to-treasure shops are havens for DIYers and collectors alike.

    Northern Virginia

ManassasSouthern Living issued The Ultimate Antiquing Tour in their November 2011 edition and those gems are still shining brightly in Virginia. Writer Paula Disbrowe plotted her way from Maryland into Virginia, even including suggested places to eat.

    Highlights:

    Also See:

    Shenandoah Valley

Cabin Creekwood in Lyndhurst offers local shopping suggestions to their guests just as any good cabin owner would. I came across their blog and an entry entitled Antiquing in Virginia: 4 Shops Worth Visiting caught my attention. Who knows best? Locals know best. If you’re in the Staunton area, check out Valley of Virginia Antiques in Fairfield, the Stuarts Draft Antique Mall, The Factory Antique Mall in Verona, or Memory Makers in downtown Staunton.

    Also See:

    Coastal Virginia

Take your hunt for antiques to the Eastern Shore of Virginia. That’s just what writer Krys Stefansky of The Virginian-Pilot did in her article Road Trip: Find Antique Heaven on the Eastern Shore. Her recommended stops include Blue Crow Antique Mall in Keller, Exmore’s Antique Emporium, and two dining destinations as well: Big’s Place – The Gaskill Family Restaurant in Painter and Yellow Duck Bakery Cafe in Exmore. Read her article to see why she ends it, “We’re coming back.”

It’s Tax-Free Shopping Weekend in Virginia!

by Casey | Posted on July 31st, 2013

This weekend, August 2-4, is Virginia’s tax-free shopping weekend.  Created for back to school shopping, anyone can shop and save big on clothes, shoes and more. It’s the perfect weekend to hit the outlets, malls and Main Streets of Virginia.

    Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets

Potomac Mills Mall, located in Woodbridge, is Virginia’s largest outlet mall with more than 200 stores, and they’ve dubbed this weekend “No Tax, Save the Max.” Expect to cash in on great outlet prices plus additional sales this weekend only. Look for the “Super Sale” signs in the windows of participating stores.

Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets in Leesburg has 110 outlet stores. Williamsburg Premium Outlets in Williamsburg offers 135 outlet stores. Both are having an additional sale on top of their 25-65% off retail prices and are offering extended shopping hours. Join the VIP Lounge for free to access exclusive online coupons for even more savings.

Some of the deals you can expect this weekend at both Leesburg Corner and Williamsburg are “Buy 1, Get One 50% Off” at Adidas, Converse, Ecco, and Stride Rite Keds Sperry. At G.H. Bass & Co. men’s and women’s footwear is “Buy 1, Get 2 Free” through August 7.

For clusters of great shopping, look to some of Virginia’s metropolitan areas. In Richmond there are several shopping destinations including the boutiques of CarytownShort Pump Town Center, and Stony Point Fashion Park. While you won’t find the outlet prices here, you will find the biggest brand names.

Short Pump Town Center invites you to bring your same-day receipts totaling $100 or more to Guest Services to receive a $15 gift card anytime August 2 through 4. *Offer excludes Macy’s, Dillard’s, Nordstrom, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Apple and eateries.

    Shopping in Alexandria

Have your kids in tow with you at Stony Point Fashion Park on Saturday? They’ll be entertained by Radio Disney between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. near the Pop Jet Fountain. Don’t miss your chance to win a family four-pack of tickets to see Bridget  Mendler at Busch Gardens.

If the thought of crowds makes you clam up, go Main Street. You will be pleasantly surprised with what you find – unique fashions, school supplies that will not be easily confused with those of classmates, and superb customer service. When you “shop local” you feel the appreciation of those small business owners.

Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall – More than 120 shops and 30 restaurants on and around old Main Street.

Downtown Roanoke and City Market – One-of-a-kind shops and galleries.

Virginia is for Lovers is about LOVE – pure and simple.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and we have a few gift suggestions for the various loves of your life.

Wine is big business in Virginia and with more than 200 wineries to visit, we have a few special Virginia is for Lovers accoutrements for your tasting excursions.

7" stuffed bear - Virginia is for LoversOur flexi-bottle chiller is a freezable PVC bottle pouch with special cold-holding rosin pickets. We’ve added some pizzazz to it with our logo, of course. Give it to your wine lover for just $9, then add in a Virginia is for Wine Lovers 8 oz. wine glass for $9.30 more.

Kids love a good gift from mom and dad at Valentine’s Day, and you can give them a fluffy one (our 7″ black bear), a healthy one (our heart jump rope or heart-shaped water bottle), a sweet one (our chocolate bar) or a techie one (our cordster). $2.80 to $11.90.

Planning a surprise beach vacation in Virginia this year? (Don’t worry, we won’t tell.) Help your Valentine get the hint with our water and sand resistant beach mat for just $13.90. It’s a generous 36″ x 72″.

For the pet lover, check out our Virginia is for Dog Lovers cotton bandanna. It’s $7.40 and is made in the USA. Or, get ready for your next Virginia road trip with our collapsible pet travel food and water bowls – only $4 each.

For those who are a little nostalgic or those who just love a good ol’ vintage look, see our “old school” variety – especially the trucker hats! They’re $11.90 each. And yes, we have those awesome retro logo t-shirts, too. See the whole collection.

    Handcrafted Holiday Gifts

by Casey | Posted on November 29th, 2012

Everyone on your list deserves something special, so why not give them an original creation from one of Virginia’s talented artisans? From art galleries and studios to craft shows and bazaars, beautiful baubles, sculptures, stained glass, paintings, jewelry and photography are available for purchase. Let the hunt for your perfect heartfelt gift begin!

    The Artisan Center, Martinsville

    The Artisan Center, Martinsville

At Heartwood in Abingdon shoppers will find a wide selection of handmade gifts – all juried to be the best of the best. Soaps, quilts, instruments, pottery, glass and wood works touch the creative side of things while coffee, tea, wine, jams, jellies, apparel and CDs round out the immense gift selection.

Not far from Breaks Interstate Park and the Virginia/Kentucky border is Haysi, where you’ll find Mountain Art Works – a treasure trove of locally made items. Woodwork, paintings, quilts, afghans, candles and even the occasional  guitar, mandolin, fiddle or banjo handcrafted by one of the nearby luthiers are all available for purchase. If you’re seeking authentic Appalachian gifts, this is your place.

The Artisan Center in Martinsville’s Historic Uptown District is the creative hub for the community, offering the works of 66 artists in their retail store as well as workshops for aspiring artisans, all thanks to Patrick Henry Community College. Should your handmade gift search lead you here, you’ll find ceramics, paintings, fabric creations, metal, wood and glass works, jewelry, furniture and quite a bit more.

Just off Interstate 81 in the Shenandoah Valley is Crafty Hands, located inside The Shops at Dayton Farmers Market in Dayton. Here you’ll find the works of famed artist P. Buckley Moss as well as jewelry, burnt wood pieces, wind chimes and baskets.

    Buck Island Bay Decoys

    Buck Island Bay Decoys

For the duck hunter or nature lover on your list, check out Buck Island Bay Decoys in Montebello. Richard Christy’s award-winning, authentic waterfowl carvings are known throughout the States and abroad. Each piece is carved from native white cedar and tupelo gum; no two pieces are alike. While you have Mr. Christy’s ear, ask him about his time as President Gerald Ford’s Chef and maybe even ask if his Rock-N-Creek Cabin is available for the night.

See art in progress when you visit Alexandria and shop the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Eighty-two studios for 165 artisans give artsy shoppers a plethora of gift-buying options.

Take a bit of the water home with you when you shop the Aft Gallery at Skipjack Nautical Wares in Portsmouth – a premier marine art gallery of original works by regional, national and international artists. Expect to find nautical jewelry, seascape paintings, carvings, decoys, ships in bottles, naval and military paintings and prints, and nearly anything else marine-art worthy you can think of. Nearly 30 artists are represented at Aft Gallery.

Specializing in acrylic and pastel landscapes of the Chesapeake Bay, Gayle N. Mandell opens her Moran Creek Studio in Weems to you for shopping Wednesday through Saturday. Commission requests are welcome!

Hidden Treasures Craft Gallery in Parksley on Virginia’s Eastern Shore may be the home of Laughing Dog Jewelry, but shoppers will also find homemade soaps, lotions, candles and a bundle more. The artists here are members of the more than 20-strong Eastern Shore Art League. To see more artists’ work , visit the ESAL Art Gallery in Onancock.

Which direction will you head for your perfect handcrafted gift? Find more galleries as well as a list of craft shows at Virginia.org/HandmadeHolidays.
