Visit the Blue Ridge Parkway this fall for exciting fall color and events.

by Mary | Posted on October 4th, 2011

Fall is the favorite time for visiting the Blue Ridge as the amazing color of the the hillsides and the road shoulders are in full glory. The Parkway varies in elevation from 650 feet to over 6,000 feet. The elevation plays a key role in the color change so be sure to venture north and south on the parkway and look east and west at different sections to see all of the beautiful foliage.Mabry Mill

You don’t want to miss Mabry Mill, one of the most photographed spots on the parkway. This historic water-powered gristmill and sawmill at Milepost 176.2, also has a blacksmith shop. Many demonstrations take place with Applebutter making on Sundays in October as well as good old fashioned Bluegrass music. Stop at the Mabry Mill Restaurant nearby to get some of their famous buckwheat pancakes.

After you’ve snapped your pictures of the mill, venture to the Rocky Knob Recreation Area. Rocky Knob (MP170), one of the first developed areas on the Blue Ridge Parkway, offers camping, picnicking and wonderful opportunities for hiking. The Rock Castle Gorge National Recreational Trail starts at the Rocky Knob Campground (MP167) and is a 10.8 mile loop trail.

Peaks of OtterFurther north on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 86 is Peaks of Otter – Flat Top, Sharp Top and Harkening Hill. The summit of Flat
Top or Sharp Top offers a unique opportunity to enjoy spectacular scenic vistas and sunrises. Interpretative programs, wildlife exhibits, walking trails, self guided wildflower walks, picnic areas, campground, restaurant and lodge are available in this developed area of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Be sure to share your foliage pictures with us at Virginia.org/fall.

Down Home in Bristol

by Mary | Posted on September 12th, 2011

Looking for something to do this weekend? Head on down to Bristol. This charming city is in two states – Virginia and Tennessee. You don’t want to miss the award-winning Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion.

“It isn’t just a music festival. It’s an infectious, three-day music experience, bursting with creative passion, electricity, and soul–a celebration of Bristol’s heritage as the Birthplace of Country Music.” In 1927, on State Street, the first country music recordings were made with The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Ernest Stoneman and others. These recordings are known as the Bristol Sessions and are known as the “big bang” of country music. (http://www.bristolrhythm.com/)

Every third weekend in September (this year it is September 16-18), State Street in historic Downtown Bristol, TN/VA is packed with music from Appalachia’s past, present and future. The Reunion offers 20 stages of live music that include five outdoor stages, a dance tent, 15 indoor venues and a children’s stage on Saturday from 9am-1pm for a fun event for families.

The best part, Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion is among the most affordable music festivals around!
