Ushering in its’ 17th year of world renowned arts and entertainment in Coastal Virginia, the Virginia Arts Festival gets underway March 17 with singing Celts, The Chieftans, and wraps up on June 1 with the Flying Proms Symphonic Airshow Spectacular. The beginning and ending are significant in their own right, but it’s the power in the middle you won’t want to miss.
The big event is the Virginia International Tattoo, occurring April 25-28 at the Scope Arena in Norfolk. Presented in the grand tradition of the world’s oldest tattoos, this Tattoo is an all-American show of patriotism and pride. The dynamic cast of more than 850 hails from several countries and offers something for everyone. Count on marching bands, massed pipes and drums, military drill teams, Celtic dancers, choirs and as always, surprise guests!
Other notable events include a live broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor on May 4. Be a part of the audience at The Ted Constant Convocation Center on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk.
Coppelia, performed by Birmingham Royal Ballet, is receiving great acclaim. Daily Express (UK) calls it, “mischievous and vivid,” while The Stage (UK) says it’s, “staged and so beautifully danced … Cheer for BRB, they are at their peak.” See the performance at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk April 19-21.
Mature audiences will be treated to Meow Meow, a cabaret performer. This show is suggested for ages 16 and older. Meow Meow is hailed a “dazzlingly multi-talented performer” by The Age (Australia). See her March 19-24 at Robin Hixon Theater in Norfolk.
Family events include the Virginia Chocolate Festival on March 23 in Norfolk at the Scope Exhibition Hall, the PANorama Caribbean Music Fest May 10-11 on the 24th Street Stage in Virginia Beach, Australia’s Strange Fruit May 10-14 in the Festival Green in Norfolk, the U.S. Army TRADOC Band Memorial Day Concert in Newport News’ City Center at Oyster Point on May 27, and of course the aforementioned Flying Proms on June 1.
