This weekend, August 3-5, is Virginia’s tax-free back-to-school shopping weekend and the perfect time to hit the outlets, malls and Main Streets to score the goods for fall. Here are a few of Virginia’s top shopping destinations as well as the details about the tax-free weekend.
Potomac Mills Mall, located in Woodbridge, is having a huge sale on top of the already deeply discounted prices. Dubbed “No Tax, Save the Max,” it’s additional savings (on top of the outlet prices) at select retailers including The Children’s Place, Gap Outlet, Nautica, Nike Factory Store, Bloomingdale’s – The Outlet Store and Stride Rite Outlet. In addition, Virginia residents can stop by Guest Services to receive a free shopping tote while supplies last.
Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets in Leesburg has 110 outlet stores for your family shopping. Williamsburg Premium Outlets in Williamsburg offers 135 outlet stores. Both are having an additional sale on top of their 25-65% off retail prices and are offering extended shopping hours.
Some of the deals you can expect this weekend at both Leesburg Corner and Williamsburg are “Buy 1, Get One 50% Off” at Champion, Converse, Reebok and Stride Rite Keds Sperry and 50% off everything at Puma. Columbia Sportswear invites you to be one of the first shoppers of the day on August 3. In doing so, they’ll reward you with a $10 gift card and 15% off your entire purchase until noon.
For clusters of great shopping, look to some of Virginia’s metropolitan areas. In Richmond there are several shopping destinations including the boutiques of Carytown, Short Pump Town Center, and Stony Point Fashion Park. While you won’t find the outlet prices here, you will find the biggest brand names.
If the thought of crowds makes you clam up, go Main Street. You will be pleasantly surprised with what you find – unique fashions (in a good way), school supplies that will not be easily confused with those of classmates and superb customer service. When you “shop local” you feel the appreciation of those small business owners.
Virginia’s great downtown town shopping options include Lexington, Staunton, Charlottesville, Culpeper, Roanoke, Fredericksburg, Old Town Alexandria and the Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk, but those certainly aren’t all. See our statewide shopping directory to filter by the type of shop you’re looking for and where.
About Virginia’s tax-free weekend, from the Virginia Department of Taxation: “During this three-day period, purchases of qualifying school supplies selling for $20 or less per item, and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax.” List of qualifying items
Enjoy your shopping! It’s just another way to spend time with the ones you love.
