It’s hard to believe it, but the month of June has arrived. How did that happen?! Lucky for those of us who have had our nose to the grind, June is a month of exciting relaxation. School’s out, it’s warm, and summer is calling …
What have you planned for your month? If you’re anything like me, you’re wingin’ it as you go. Here are some suggestions for wonderful ways to spend a June weekend in Virginia.
June 4-6 – Go Outside
Fish for free in Virginia this weekend! Load up the kids, poles, tackle, and camera to capture a great shot for the Kids ‘n Fishing Photo Contest sponsored by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
Looking for some direction with the game of angling? Check out the Family Fishing Clinic at Munden Point Park in Virginia Beach.
At Hungry Mother State Park in Marion, the Outdoor Expo and Carp Fishing Tournament highlight the weekend. If your family is into biking, this event coincides with the 3rd Annual Bike Smyth County event which includes family loops!
Succulent strawberries are calling at the 20th Annual Greene County Strawberry Festival in Stanardsville. Taste strawberry cakes, pies, slushies, and other delectable desserts while enjoying live music, arts and crafts, and fun kids’ activities, too.
June 11-13 – Listen to the Music
Where can you listen to 130 hours of live music, see grand boats on parade, rub elbows with pirates, and kick back to a fireworks show at night? The 34th Norfolk Harborfest, that’s where! Make a weekend of it!
The blues … three days of live blues performances in Falls Church … that will ease your stress. Check out The Tinner Hill, John Jackson Blues Festival, boasting wonderful musical acts, carnival games, and good ‘ol soul food!
Hustle on over to Hot Springs where the Virginia Blues & Jazz Festival is being held at Garth Newell. Barbecue, beer, wine … this event is billed as a funky and fun weekend.
June 18-20 – Native Virginia
See what a powwow is all about on the Mattaponi Indian Reservation in West Point. This is the 14th year and the only powwow actually held on a Virginia reservation. Kids will love the dancing and drumming. Grand entry is at noon, so grab your chairs and don’t be late!
Some of bluegrass’ shining stars will be on hand at the Virginia Mountain Music Festival in Richlands. Grab a seat for Grammy-nominated Cherryholmes, Marty Raybon, and great local acts! Held rain or shine – y’all come!
June 25-27 – It’s Water Time
Bring your own equipment or rent some for the Smith River Family Fun Float! Load up the family and pets for a chillaxing float down the beautiful Smith River. You can’t beat the river in the summer!
For a taste of the Bay, check out the 61st Annual Gwynn’s Island Festival in Mathews! Food, tunes, and more make this a pretty cool place to spend the day.
On Wallop’s Island, your kids can get up close and personal with the things that live Under the Sea! It’s hands-on fun for kids ages 7 to 12 at the Marine Science Consortium.
